Loving Support© Through Peer Counseling: A Journey Together is an innovative and comprehensive curriculum program developed by Every Mother, Inc. for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) WIC Program.  Materials are designed to help WIC agencies establish and maintain an evidence-based peer counseling program.

The program includes two curricula:
Loving Support© Through Peer Counseling: A Journey Together – FOR WICMANAGERS provides State and local WIC agency managers and peer counselor coordinators/supervisors with practical strategies for implementing an effective peer counseling program. It addresses such topics as the FNS Loving Support© Model, management considerations in establishing a program, recruiting and hiring peer counselors, scope of practice, supervising and mentoring peer counselors, and retaining staff.

Loving Support© Through Peer Counseling:
A Journey Together – FOR TRAINING PEER COUNSELORS provides numerous resources for training peer counselors.  Peer counselors learn about their role as part of the WIC team, counseling and communication skills, how to help mothers get a good start with breastfeeding, preventing and managing common concerns, and how to talk with mothers from pregnancy through weaning.

The curricula include an innovative and cutting edge presentation design that is highly visual and employs a flexible navigation approach.  It also includes speaker notes, handouts, trainer guides, a Peer Counseling Handbook, and numerous graphic components.  For more details, see Curriculum Development. The presentation platform is available for downloading at Aspire Communications, www.aspirecommunications.com/wic.html. The curriculum components will also be available for downloading in March 2012 at the WIC Works Resource System at www.nal.usda.gov/wicworks/Learning_Center.

Using Loving Support© to Grow and Glow in WIC: Breastfeeding Training for Local WIC Staff was developed by Every Mother, Inc. for the USDA Food and Nutrition Service WIC Program.  It is designed to provide all staff who interact with WIC participants the knowledge and skills they need to provide effective breastfeeding promotion and support.

WIC has a long history of promoting and supporting breastfeeding, focusing on helping mothers make an informed choice about infant feeding by providing evidence-based breastfeeding information, encouraging mothers to breastfeed exclusively, providing anticipatory guidance, and creating and advocating for a supportive environment that will help mothers carry out their breastfeeding intentions.

Every Mother, Inc. provided regional train-the-trainer events around the U.S. using the curriculum, and continues to provide direct training for local WIC staff across the country.  It is our hope that staff in every WIC clinic will provide a cohesive circle of care to give consistent breastfeeding messages and support for WIC mothers. To access all of the curriculum materials, including presentation modules, speaker notes, handouts, and graphic elements, visit the WIC Works Resource System at:  http://www.nal.usda.gov/wicworks/Learning_Center/BF_training.html.

The Business Case for Breastfeeding is a comprehensive resource kit developed by Every Mother, Inc. for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau.  The kit is designed to assist businesses with establishing lactation support services that help breastfeeding women continue to nurse their children once they return to work.

The resource kit targets multiple groups: business managers, human resource directors, wellness division coordinators, employees, and breastfeeding educators and advocates assisting businesses with establishing lactation support services for employed breastfeeding women. The resource kit and individual components are available free of charge through the HRSA Distribution Center at: www.ask.hrsa.gov.

Every Mother developed a national training curriculum, “Implementing The Business Case for Breastfeeding in Your Community” to assist state and local breastfeeding educators and community partners with conducting outreach with local businesses to implement worksite lactation support programs.  Every Mother presented the curriculum as an intensive 2-day state-based community training events in 36 U.S. States through MCHB and the HHS Office on Women’s Health.
See Worksite Lactation Support for more details and resources available for employers.

Every Mother, Inc. also develops numerous training curricula and presentations for Departments of Health, State and local WIC Agencies, and other groups.
