Welcoming a New Partner in Breastfeeding Promotion: New York State WIC
Launches its New Website

The always creative folks of New York State WIC have a lot to be proud of--a
long history of breastfeeding support and promotion, a pioneering
Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program, innovative outreach to the community
to highlight the importance of breastfeeding. Add to this list their latest
endeavor: www.breastfeedingpartners.org, a website for breastfeeding peer
counselors, breastfeeding mothers, women and their families.

The website offers several sections: The "All About Breastfeeding" section
was developed for pregnant women, mothers and their families and contains
basic breastfeeding information, frequently asked questions about
breastfeeding and the latest breastfeeding news. "Choosing how you will
feed your baby is one of the most important decisions pregnant women will
make," according to Patricia Lane, IBCLC, of the WIC Training Center in
Albany. Lane, who worked on the development of the site, added, "WIC and
breastfeedingpartners can help parents learn about the many benefits that
breastfeeding offers both mother and baby."

The web site also includes a training section for Peer Counselors and health
professionals who work with breastfeeding mothers. Peer Counselors play a
key role in WIC and supporting them in their continuing education is an
investment in the future. "Peer Counselors," Lane explains, "act as mentors
and friends, giving new mothers confidence and support before and during
breastfeeding. A breastfeeding peer counselor has breastfed her children
and understands the challenges and joys." Information in this section of
the site is printed in “classrooms” to help peer counselors and health care
workers keep up to date in breastfeeding management. Video clips, training
resources and bulletin boards are available under this password-protected
portion of the site.

Add www.breastfeedingpartners.org to your 'favorites' list so you can visit
there often as they continue to expand their site--whether you are a
breastfeeding mother or supporter or an expectant mom or dad, you'll find
plenty of information and resources for learning there. Congratulations New
York WIC for your continued pioneering spirit!
